No Shows: Explaining the Causes

You will see an updated Macro for this verbiage within Zendesk – Please make sure to use it effectively for customers who are having issues and need help understanding why:

Several things are more than likely contributing to the number of “No Shows” you are seeing:

  1. Things are always unusually crazy before, during, and immediately after a major holiday (IE: Thanksgiving, Christmas, Spring Break, etc).
  2. They found new or better opportunities in the short time that they had scheduled the interview. If they’re applying to you, they’re applying to 8 other places on average. At that point, it all depends on which company resonates the most with them based on “what’s in it for me”.
  3. The day got away from them and they really didn’t feel comfortable or had anxiety about the interview and decided to just abandon it altogether. This is in part a natural screening process, but also our job as business owners two ease the 3 biggest factors for applicants: new environment, New people, new skills. This is where we should really focus on eliminating as many of these factors as soon as possible.
  4. The time or distance is just not right for them. If the location is inconvenient for them or they’ve scheduled it into rush hour, it may be too big of a hassle to deal with uncertainty.
  5. Applicants are scheduling more than 3 days in advance. If they are pushing out the interview, they may be waiting for a “better opportunity” and keeping the interview as a backup
  6. They haven’t felt a personal connection with you yet – if you engage through phone the day before and can connect with them emotionally (even as short as 15 seconds), it can sell them on being there for the interview if it’s a strong culture fit.

We are seeing this happen to a lot of people for these key reasons and they shouldn’t be ignored. Sometimes it’s helpful to take a step back and think about each one objectively – adopt the motto: “What could I do different?” (Take our hiring health check for a better understand of this). It would be very wise to take a look at how strong your competitive edge is based on Today – the job you had last month will not hold up the same as it does today. Things are change so rapidly with rising gas prices, competition evolving and learning (maybe not at the same pace as you, but enough to feel the burn). Every business needs to pivot fast or you will get left behind.

I highly recommend making sure you watch a few live videos/classes in the WootGroup Elite to cover all of these topics. I’ll post them below:
